Courses for the North American Mobility Program

Students will be expected to enroll in GETH 501 and two other courses from this list or approved by the North American Mobility Program director.

GETH 501. Ethics and Public Policy in the Sciences. (Required for North American Mobility students.)

BIOG 424. Environmental Microbiology. 4 crs. An integrated approach to studying the role of microorganisms in environmental waste management. The microbiology of air, water, soil and sewers are addressed. Emphases are placed on the public health implications of microbes and their products in the environment, and the role of microbes in bioremediation of hazardous chemical wastes.

MEDI 417. Intro to Ethics-Jurisprudence.

PHIL 273. The Ethics of Medical Care. 3 crs. Examination of such primary topics as the morality of abortion, euthanasia, and human experimentation.

PHIL 247/335. Ethics and Public Policy. 3 crs. Analysis of ethical issues raised by policy decisions in the public sector. Topics include affirmative action, privatization of public schools, gun control, abortion, capital punishment, welfare, immigration, etc.

PHIL 339. Seminar in Bioethics. 3 crs. Investigation of the ethical issues raised in health care and biomedical technology. Issues include organ transplantation, genetic technology, reproductive technology, justice in health care, etc.

POLS 204. Approaches to Comparative Politics. 3 crs. This graduate seminar reviews the traditional and contemporary literature in comparative politics, focusing on macro level analysis. Themes examined include: social science epistemology, Weber, Marx, systems theory, the state, women and feminism; "race" and ethnicity; nationalism and communalism; political culture, democracy and democratization, modernization and development, dependency, and political economy. As this seminar is intended to prepare students for the comprehensive exam in comparative politics, the emphasis is in-depth, critical analysis of the literature. (Offered once a year. Fall semester)

SYCS 390. Ethical and Social Implications in Computing.

172-047 University Intensive English Program: This program of study is made up of three core classes – Grammar/Writing, Reading/Vocabulary and Listening/Speaking. This program also offers an optional test preparation course. Students preparing for or struggling with the rigors of university-level work will learn the techniques of essay writing with correct grammar, methods for improving reading speed and comprehension, vocabulary building, note-taking, presentation skills, study and test-taking strategies. Classes include word processing, how to conduct library research and the proper protocol needed for American classroom dynamics and group projects.
